A marine vessel fitted with a device(s) to scrap or suck the sediment deposition over sea bed is known as a dredging boat (The device used for excavation and scraping of the sea bed is called the Dredge).
In a more general sense, a ship equipped with excavation tool which is capable of weeding off depositions such as sand, gravel, sediments, etc. from the seabed is referred as dredger ship or more commonly a dredger.
Dredger are of great importance, as they serve the purpose of ensuring the necessary safe bottom clearance for the safer voyages.
The excavation carried out in either shallow or fresh waters with the aim to gather up the sediments located in the bottom to dispose off at another place is called Dredging.
Types of dredging boats:
1 The trailing suction dredging boat is suitable for operation in coastal ports, wide rivers and ship anchorages.
- The bucket chain dredgeruses a series of bucket chains with buckets, driven by the upper guide wheel, and continuously rotates on the bucket bridge, so that the bucket can dredge underwater and lift it above the water surface. Place the anchor cables dropped from the front, back, left, and right to make the hull move forward or swing left and right for dredging work.
- Cutter suction dredgeris a kind of ship that is widely used in beach dredging projects at present, and it can be continuously completed at one time. It is a highly efficient and wear-resistant dredger, which is generally used.
- The grab dredgeris used for subsea operations.
- The submersible dredgeris a dredging boatwith a pumping depth of up to 30 meters. The submersible slurry pump is equipped to work underwater.
- Small dredgerare generally used in small rivers, and the pumping depth is less than 20 meters, the sand output is small, and the cost is low.
- Jet suction boat, the main components of this boat are a high-pressure water pump and a sand suction pump. The high-pressure water pump pushes the water through the high-pressure water gun into the bottom sediment layer, and the sand splashes around the suction head. It is sucked up by the sand suction pump and discharged from the upper suction pipe to the designated position. In this way, the whole work process is completed with one spray and one suction. This ship is widely used in dredging and sand fetching projects in reservoirs, artificial lakes, rivers, and ports.

What size dredge will I need? How do I choose the right dredging boat?
As a prospective dredge owner, perhaps you are most curious about what size of dredge you will need to complete your project. The answer depends on several factors, such as environmental conditions and details of the project. Having an idea of the project or type of projects you plan to complete will help determine the type of dredging equipment that best meets your requirements.
When evaluating a dredge and prior to purchase, contractors, homeowner associations, municipalities, and marina owners, should consider:
The volume of material to be dredged
The appropriate disposal method
Dredging depth and pumping distance to the disposal area
Sand discharge distance
The sand pumping capacity of the dredger you want
Contamination level of sediment and overall production
Maintenance, storage costs, wages, benefits, insurance, dredge permits, and other ancillary equipment when not in use.
